Editorial Illustration

In one of my classes we read an article called “The Strange and Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit” and were given the assignment to create an editorial illustration for it. Illustration is not my strong suit to be sure. I prefer layouts. I can illustrate in a pinch but I know that there are people out there who are far better at illustrating than I am.

In this post I wanted to show the process and final product of the work.

We first started out with thumbnail sketches:

With the thumbnail sketches complete we had to choose one to make into a full out illustration on paper:

I took this drawing and scanned it into Adobe Illustrator, then using this as a guide I made the fully illustrated image:

What was surprising about this particular assignment was that it won an award at our school art show. I almost didn’t even submit anything to the show.

For the art show we had to have the piece printed and either matted or framed. I went to Ikea and bought a $7 frame that already had a mat and everything!

Having never been in an art show before, I was extremely pleased to have won a Juror’s award (a $200 value!). It was a fun project and I enjoyed it a lot.

This was a collaboration with a friend.
